Mill focus: Solbiati

With over 140 years of fabric expertise, Solbiati has been a pioneer in fine linen since the 60s. Now owned by the esteemed Loro Piana mill, it upholds the same commitment to ultra-luxurious fibres.

Founded by Michele Solbiati in 1874, the company initially focused their efforts on heavyweight cloth such as velvet and brushed cotton. When the 1960s brought a decline in the textile industry, Solbiati and his family had to pivot in order to survive, experimenting with natural fibres such as flax to create linen. This became the company's core output, and remains so to this day.

One of Solbiati's defining features is its creative use of colour and texture. Inspired by the art world and cultural movements across history, the mill experiments with styles and blends to create signature textiles that are distinctly 'Solbiati'. Alongside pure linen, the mill is renowned for its summerweight fabric blends using natural fibres such as wool, cotton and hemp.

Sustainability is a huge part of Solbiati's mantra. Linen is often celebrated for its minimal environmental impact, requiring little to no irrigation, fertilisers, or chemical treatments and relying primarily on natural elements. All of Solbiati's linen products are recognised as European Linen, ensuring adherence to high environmental and quality standards.

Twill linen

Twill linen offers a refined alternative to plain-weave linen, combining added structure with improved wrinkle resistance, durability, and a superior drape, all while maintaining its signature lightweight and breathable feel. Its distinctive weave creates a subtle texture and a melange finish, adding depth. This is a summer cloth designed for special occasions.

Linen-wool-silk blend

With nearly equal parts linen and wool, plus a touch of silk for added softness. The classic linen slubbed finish adds character, while the wool enhances drape and structure. More relaxed than our other Solbiati jackets but equally as elegant.

Pure cotton sateen

A smoother, cotton-rich alternative to the linens, Solbaiti's pure cotton sateen is just as lightweight but with a sleeker finish, spun from a finer yarn for a smoother handfeel and lustre. This cloth exudes elegance - light and luxurious with a beautiful drape - making it an excellent choice for summer grooms.
