Is a normal suit ok for Black Tie?

If the dress code says ‘Black Tie’, then your normal work suits might not cut it. Black tie usually means a tuxedo or dinner jacket with a formal dress shirt, a bow tie, cummerbund or waistcoat and formal shoes. While there are some tweaks you can make to make it your own - going for deep jewel tones, muted shades, experimenting with fabrics or playing up your accessories - usually Black Tie means just that. If you want to try Black Tie with a twist, here’s our guide to Dress Code: Black Tie.

What is the dress code for a black tie event for men?

Black tie events tend to demand a more formal dress code that features a black or navy tuxedo or dinner jacket with satin or grosgrain lapels, complemented by a crisp white, formal dress shirt. This is usually accessorised with a bow tie, waistcoat or cummerbund and some dress shoes - you can also add cufflinks and a pocket square for an extra touch. Depending on the event, you can relax the dress code (or at least get a little more creative with it) by experimenting with colour, fabric and those finer details to add some of your personality in there.
